The rearranged Boxing Day local derby fixture of Ifield vs Pease Pottage took place on Saturday and was an expectedly niggly game. Pottage came out the stronger and immediately put Ifield under pressure with their defence having to work hard against the constant threats from Kieron Purkis, Tom Tolfrey and Tiago Andrade. Pottage’s persistence soon paid off with a good goal from Tiago Andrade on 10 mins which was closely followed just two minutes later with a goal from Kieron Purkis. James Francis was introduced for Pottage following an injury to Reece Abbott in midfield. Ifield did start to get back into the game but didn’t really threaten the Pottage goal too much with any efforts being thwarted by the strong Pottage defence of Joe Lyons, Mo Shuga’a, Mark Bevan and Alec Hayes. Ifield did have one great shot which thumped off the bar, leaving Pottage with a 0-2 lead at half time.
The second half saw Alan Pritchard replace the injured Mark Bevan in the Pottage defence and both teams fought hard with a lot of tackles from both sides. Again, Pottage had a hatful of shots on goal but could not find the back of the net until a 68th minute goal from Tom Tolfrey put Pottage 0-3 up and virtually put the game out of Ifield’s reach but was then replaced by Aiden Cawte due to an injury. Ifield almost got one back which Mo Shuga’a managed to save off the line but Kieron Purkis put the game to bed with his second goal in the 83rd minute. Steve Martin did get a consolation goal for Ifield in the 87th minute following a mix up with the Pottage defence and keeper but Pottage came away with all 3 points, giving them a run of 9 wins on the bounce. This keeps Pottage 6 points clear at the top of the table with rivals Newhaven and Barnham both having lost their games.‬‬
